A Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan is usually performed between 11 weeks and 13 weeks plus 6 days of pregnancy. During the examination, the doctor measures a small fluid-filled space at the back of the baby's neck.
This measurement, together with other information such as maternal age and, when advised, blood screening results, can help estimate the chance of certain chromosomal conditions, including Down syndrome.
The scan also provides an opportunity to assess early fetal anatomy, confirm gestational age and check the baby's heartbeat.
The NT scan is a screening test, not a diagnostic test. It estimates the likelihood of certain conditions but cannot confirm or rule them out on its own.
Depending on the findings and your medical history, your doctor may discuss additional screening or diagnostic testing. The results are considered alongside other relevant clinical information.
An NT scan does not replace the detailed anomaly scan recommended later in pregnancy, as some structural conditions may not be visible at this early stage.
What Do We Assess?
The NT scan examines important early markers and features of fetal development.
Nuchal Translucency
Measures the fluid-filled space at the back of the baby's neck.
Early Fetal Anatomy
Reviews visible fetal structures to assess development at this stage of pregnancy.
Growth and Gestational Age
Measures the baby to assess growth and confirm pregnancy dating.
Fetal Heartbeat
Checks fetal cardiac activity as part of the early pregnancy assessment.
Key Benefits
Early Chromosomal Risk Screening
Nuchal translucency measurement can contribute to screening for certain chromosomal conditions, including Down syndrome, when combined with other relevant screening information.
Early Fetal Anatomy Assessment
Provides an opportunity to examine visible fetal structures during the first trimester and identify certain findings that may require further evaluation.
Pregnancy Dating and Growth Assessment
Measurements taken during the scan help confirm gestational age and assess early fetal growth, supporting accurate pregnancy care planning.
Early Identification of Concerns
Certain ultrasound findings, including increased nuchal translucency, may indicate the need for additional assessment or specialist consultation.
Guidance for Further Testing
Screening results help doctors discuss whether additional options, such as NIPT or diagnostic testing, may be appropriate for the pregnancy.
Informed Pregnancy Care Decisions
Provides useful early information to support discussions about pregnancy monitoring, follow-up examinations and individualized care.
