A Fetal Growth Scan is an ultrasound examination used to assess how your baby is growing during pregnancy. It includes measurements of the baby's head, abdomen and thigh bone to estimate fetal weight and assess growth.

These measurements are compared with expected ranges for the stage of pregnancy. When previous scans are available, your doctor can also review the baby's growth pattern over time.

The examination may also assess the amount of amniotic fluid, the baby's position and the location of the placenta.

A Doppler Study is a specialized ultrasound technique that evaluates blood-flow patterns in selected vessels, such as the umbilical artery and, when indicated, vessels supplying the baby's brain or the uterus.

Doppler findings can provide useful information about placental circulation and how the baby is adapting during pregnancy. Your doctor decides which vessels need assessment based on your individual pregnancy.

Growth scans and Doppler studies are particularly helpful when closer monitoring is recommended, such as when there are concerns about fetal growth or certain pregnancy complications.

What Do We Assess?

The examination provides information about fetal growth and selected aspects of pregnancy wellbeing.

01

Fetal Growth & Estimated Weight

Measures the baby's head, abdomen and thigh bone to estimate weight and assess growth for the gestational age.

02

Placenta & Amniotic Fluid

Assesses placental location and the amount of fluid surrounding the baby.

03

Umbilical Artery Doppler

Evaluates blood-flow patterns in the umbilical artery when indicated, providing information about resistance in the placental circulation.

04

Additional Doppler Assessment

May include the middle cerebral artery or uterine arteries when clinically appropriate.

Why Are Growth & Doppler Studies Important?

✓

Helps monitor fetal growth and identify babies who may be smaller or larger than expected.

✓

Provides information about placental and fetal blood-flow patterns when Doppler assessment is indicated.

✓

Supports closer monitoring of pregnancies where growth concerns or certain complications are present.

✓

Helps your doctor decide whether additional monitoring or evaluation may be needed.
