Early Pregnancy Scan

An early pregnancy scan helps assess the location, viability and early development of a pregnancy. It provides information about gestational age, the baby's heartbeat when visible, and the number of babies.

Recommended Period: 6–10 Weeks

An early pregnancy scan is an ultrasound examination usually performed during the first few weeks of pregnancy, commonly around 6–10 weeks. It helps confirm that the pregnancy is developing inside the uterus, checks the baby's heartbeat when visible, and estimates how many weeks pregnant you are.

During the examination, the doctor measures the developing baby to estimate the gestational age and expected delivery date. The scan also helps identify whether you are expecting one baby or more than one. Depending on how early the examination is performed, some details may not yet be visible and a follow-up scan may be advised.

This scan provides important information about the early stages of pregnancy and helps your doctor plan further pregnancy care based on the findings.

The scan may be performed over the abdomen or, when a clearer view is needed in very early pregnancy, through a transvaginal ultrasound.

Your doctor examines the pregnancy sac, developing baby and surrounding structures as appropriate for the stage of pregnancy. These findings help assess early pregnancy development and determine whether any further examination is needed.

An early pregnancy scan provides an initial assessment. It does not replace the detailed ultrasound examinations recommended later in pregnancy.

What Do We Assess?

The examination focuses on important features of early pregnancy and its development.

01

Pregnancy Location

Checks whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus.

02

Gestational Age

Measures the developing baby to estimate how many weeks pregnant you are.

03

Pregnancy Viability

Assesses early pregnancy development and checks for fetal cardiac activity when appropriate for the stage of pregnancy.

Checks whether the pregnancy involves one baby or more than one.

Key Benefits

01

Early Pregnancy Confirmation

Helps establish whether a pregnancy is visible inside the uterus and provides an initial assessment of its development.

02

Accurate Pregnancy Dating

Early ultrasound measurements help estimate gestational age and establish an expected delivery date, particularly when menstrual dates are uncertain.

03

Assessment of Fetal Heartbeat

Allows the doctor to check for fetal cardiac activity when it is expected to be visible at the particular stage of pregnancy.

04

Identification of Multiple Pregnancy

Helps determine whether one or more babies are developing, supporting appropriate planning for further pregnancy monitoring.

05

Early Detection of Concerns

May identify findings that require additional assessment, such as an uncertain pregnancy location or unexpected early development.

06

Better Pregnancy Care Planning

Provides useful information for scheduling follow-up scans, discussing findings and planning appropriate antenatal care.
