What Is Fetal Blood Transfusion?

Fetal Blood Transfusion, also known as Intrauterine Blood Transfusion (IUT), is a specialized prenatal treatment used when a baby develops significant anaemia before birth.

Fetal anaemia occurs when the baby's red blood cell level becomes too low. Severe cases can affect oxygen delivery to developing organs and may lead to serious complications if untreated.

During the procedure, specially prepared, compatible donor blood is transfused into the fetal circulation, usually through the umbilical vein, under continuous ultrasound guidance.

Fetal anaemia may develop because of maternal red-cell antibodies, certain fetal infections or other less common medical conditions.

Before recommending treatment, a fetal medicine specialist assesses the baby's condition using ultrasound, Doppler studies and, when appropriate, direct fetal blood testing.

Intrauterine transfusion is an invasive procedure requiring specialist expertise, careful monitoring and follow-up. Some babies may need more than one transfusion before delivery. The potential benefits and risks are discussed with the family beforehand.

When May Fetal Blood Transfusion Be Needed?

The decision to perform an intrauterine transfusion depends on the severity of fetal anaemia, gestational age and overall pregnancy assessment.

01

Severe Fetal Anaemia

Significant reduction in fetal red blood cells may require treatment to improve the baby's oxygen-carrying capacity.

02

Red-Cell Alloimmunization

Maternal antibodies can sometimes destroy fetal red blood cells, causing haemolytic disease and severe anaemia.

03

Selected Fetal Infections

Certain infections, including parvovirus B19, may cause significant fetal anaemia requiring specialist treatment.

04

Abnormal Doppler Findings

Increased middle cerebral artery blood-flow velocity may suggest fetal anaemia and prompt further assessment.

Key Benefits

01

Correction of Fetal Anaemia

Transfusion increases the baby's circulating red blood cells and helps improve oxygen delivery when significant anaemia is present.

02

Potentially Life-Saving Treatment

In selected severe cases, timely treatment may improve the chance of fetal survival and reduce complications related to anaemia.

03

Ultrasound-Guided Precision

Continuous ultrasound imaging helps the specialist guide transfusion into the fetal circulation and monitor the baby.

04

Support for Fetal Development

Improving severe anaemia may help support fetal circulation and development during a critical stage of pregnancy.

05

Opportunity to Continue Pregnancy

When treatment is successful, it may allow pregnancy to continue while the baby is monitored and delivery is planned.

06

Personalized Follow-Up Care

Regular ultrasound and Doppler assessments help specialists evaluate treatment response and determine whether further transfusions are needed.
