An Anomaly Scan, also known as a TIFFA Scan (Targeted Imaging for Fetal Anomalies), is a detailed ultrasound examination generally performed between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy.
During this scan, the doctor carefully examines different parts of your baby's body, including the brain, face, spine, heart, abdomen, kidneys, arms and legs. The purpose is to assess how these structures are developing and look for visible structural abnormalities.
The examination also includes measurements of your baby's growth and an assessment of the placenta and amniotic fluid.
The scan is usually performed over the abdomen. The time needed can vary depending on the baby's position and how clearly different structures can be seen.
Sometimes the baby may be positioned in a way that makes certain areas difficult to examine. In such cases, the doctor may ask you to change position, take a short break or return for another examination.
Although an anomaly scan provides a detailed assessment, not every condition can be detected through ultrasound. Your doctor will explain the findings and discuss whether any additional evaluation is recommended.
What Do We Assess?
The examination reviews your baby's anatomy and other important aspects of pregnancy.
Brain, Face & Spine
Examines visible structures of the brain, facial profile and spine.
Heart & Internal Organs
Reviews the fetal heart and organs such as the stomach, kidneys and bladder.
Limbs & Fetal Growth
Examines the arms and legs and takes measurements to assess fetal growth.
Placenta & Amniotic Fluid
Assesses placental location and the amount of fluid surrounding the baby.
Key Benefits
Detailed Fetal Anatomy Assessment
Provides a comprehensive ultrasound examination of the baby's developing organs and body structures, including the brain, heart, spine and abdomen.
Detection of Structural Abnormalities
Helps identify certain visible structural abnormalities during pregnancy, allowing the doctor to recommend further evaluation when additional concerns are found.
Assessment of Fetal Growth
Includes important measurements of the baby's head, abdomen and limbs to assess growth in relation to the stage of pregnancy.
Placenta and Amniotic Fluid Evaluation
Assesses the location of the placenta and the amount of amniotic fluid, providing additional information about the pregnancy.
Timely Specialist Referral
When a possible abnormality is identified, the findings can help guide referral for specialized imaging, counselling or further diagnostic testing.
Personalized Pregnancy Care Planning
Provides valuable information to help plan follow-up examinations, appropriate pregnancy monitoring and delivery care when additional attention is needed.
