A Fetal Neurosonogram is a specialized ultrasound examination that provides a detailed assessment of your baby's developing brain and central nervous system during pregnancy.
While a routine pregnancy ultrasound includes basic views of the fetal brain, neurosonography uses additional targeted views to examine important brain structures in greater detail.
It may help identify or further evaluate certain abnormalities involving the fetal brain and nervous system.
Fetal neurosonography is commonly performed during the second or third trimester, depending on the reason for examination and the stage of pregnancy.
Your doctor may recommend this examination if a routine ultrasound identifies a finding that needs further evaluation, or when certain pregnancy-related risk factors are present.
The findings help guide specialist counselling, follow-up examinations and pregnancy care. Some conditions may not be visible on ultrasound, and additional investigations may occasionally be recommended.
What Do We Assess?
A fetal neurosonogram uses detailed ultrasound views to examine important structures of the developing fetal brain.
Brain Structure & Development
Examines the overall appearance, organization and development of the fetal brain.
Brain Ventricles
Assesses the fluid-filled spaces within the brain, including their size and appearance.
Cerebellum & Posterior Fossa
Evaluates structures at the back of the brain, including the cerebellum and surrounding anatomy.
Midline Brain Structures
Reviews important central brain structures, including the corpus callosum when adequately visualized.
Key Benefits
Detailed Fetal Brain Assessment
Provides specialized ultrasound views of the developing fetal brain, allowing important structures to be examined in greater detail than during a routine screening examination.
Evaluation of Suspected Abnormalities
Helps investigate possible brain abnormalities identified during routine pregnancy scans and provides additional information about concerning ultrasound findings.
Assessment of Brain Ventricles
Allows detailed examination of the fluid-filled spaces within the fetal brain, helping identify enlargement or other findings that may require further assessment.
Evaluation of Complex Brain Structures
Provides targeted views of structures such as the cerebellum, posterior fossa and midline brain anatomy, supporting a more comprehensive examination when indicated.
Guidance for Further Investigations
Findings can help doctors determine whether additional examinations, such as follow-up ultrasound, fetal MRI or other investigations, may be appropriate.
Specialist Counselling and Care Planning
Provides valuable information to support discussions with families, specialist referrals and planning of pregnancy monitoring or newborn care when necessary.
