Fetal Echocardiography, commonly known as a Fetal Echo, is a specialized ultrasound examination used to assess the structure and function of your baby's heart before birth.
While a routine pregnancy ultrasound includes an assessment of the fetal heart, fetal echocardiography provides a more detailed examination of the heart's chambers, valves, major blood vessels and blood-flow patterns.
The examination helps identify certain congenital heart abnormalities and provides important information for planning further assessment or care when needed.
A fetal echo is commonly performed between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy, although it may be recommended earlier or later depending on the clinical situation.
Your doctor may recommend this examination if a routine scan raises concerns about the baby's heart, there is a relevant family history, or certain maternal or pregnancy-related risk factors are present.
The scan is generally performed over the abdomen using ultrasound. The doctor will explain the findings and advise whether further evaluation or follow-up is needed. Not every heart condition can be detected before birth.
What Do We Assess?
A fetal echo examines the baby's heart in greater detail using specialized ultrasound views and Doppler techniques.
Heart Chambers & Structure
Examines the heart's four chambers, their arrangement and the walls separating them.
Heart Valves & Blood Vessels
Assesses the heart valves and major blood vessels entering and leaving the fetal heart.
Blood Flow Through the Heart
Uses Doppler ultrasound to evaluate blood-flow direction and patterns within the fetal heart.
Heart Rhythm & Function
Evaluates the baby's heart rate, rhythm and how effectively the heart is contracting.
Key Benefits
Detailed Fetal Heart Examination
Provides a specialized assessment of the baby's developing heart, including its chambers, valves and major blood vessels before birth.
Early Detection of Heart Abnormalities
Helps identify certain congenital heart abnormalities during pregnancy, allowing further specialist evaluation and appropriate care planning when needed.
Assessment of Heart Function
Evaluates how the fetal heart contracts and pumps blood, providing important information about its function during pregnancy.
Heart Rhythm and Blood Flow Evaluation
Uses specialized ultrasound and Doppler techniques to assess the baby's heart rhythm and blood-flow patterns, helping identify possible concerns.
Timely Specialist Consultation
When a possible heart condition is identified, the findings can support referral to pediatric cardiology specialists for further assessment.
Better Delivery and Newborn Care Planning
Important heart findings before birth can help doctors plan appropriate delivery arrangements and newborn cardiac care when specialized support may be required.
